Ultraframe SkySpace Installation of a Gym at Reynard House, Leicester
Project Overview
Study Inn, known for providing high-end student accommodation across the UK, sought to repurpose Reynard House, a five-story U-shaped building in Leicester, into a premium living space for students. With a prime location near De Montfort University, the project aimed to maximize available space and enhance student amenities.
As part of this transformation, two additional floors were constructed on the existing structure. However, an opportunity remained to further utilize the inner courtyard, which was otherwise underutilized. The vision was to create a gym – a vital component of student well-being – within this space while ensuring access to natural light.
Challenges & Requirements
- Weight Restrictions – Any materials used had to be lightweight, as they would need to be transported through the existing building.
- Natural Light – Due to adjacent bedroom windows facing the courtyard, vertical windows were not an option, requiring an alternative way to introduce daylight.
- Structural Integration – The new gym structure needed to complement the existing architecture while meeting modern energy efficiency and design standards.
Solution: Ultraframe’s SkySpace System
To address these challenges, Ultraframe provided an innovative SkySpace glazed roof system, designed to flood the gym with natural light, creating an energizing environment.
- Glazed Roof Design – A high-performance double-glazed glass roof in grey, allowing maximum daylight penetration.
- SkySpace Aluminium Portal Frame – A robust yet lightweight framework supporting the glass structure.
- Aluminium Side Frames & Insulated Panels – Ensuring stability and thermal efficiency while maintaining an open, modern aesthetic.
Installation Process
The installation was expertly carried out by Nu Openings Ltd, specialists in Ultraframe products, who had previously completed similar projects for Study Inn in Nottingham, Coventry, and Cambridge.
Results & Impact
- Enhanced Student Amenities – The addition of the gym significantly improved the value of the accommodation.
- Efficient Use of Space – Transforming the courtyard into a functional facility without compromising the building’s layout.
- Aesthetics & Comfort – The glass roof solution provided a bright and airy atmosphere, boosting student well-being.
